Why One Therapist is Usually Best
Therapy is most effective when there is a consistent, cohesive treatment plan. Each therapist uses a specific clinical approach and develops a structured treatment plan tailored to your goals. Working with multiple providers for the same concerns can lead to several challenges:
- Conflicting Advice: One therapist might suggest a "gradual exposure" approach to a challenge, while another might suggest "complete boundary setting." Trying to navigate both can cause unnecessary emotional distress and confusion.
- Stalled Progress: When care is fragmented, it takes longer for any one therapist to see the full picture of your growth, making it harder to reach your milestones.
- Lack of Clarity: Working with a single clinician allows for a focused, deep dive into your history and behavioral patterns without the noise of differing professional opinions.
Are There Any Exceptions?
There are specific situations where seeing more than one provider is not only allowed but often encouraged:
- Relational vs. Individual Care: It is perfectly okay—and often helpful—to participate in individual therapy while also attending couples or family therapy. These address different dynamics (personal growth vs. relationship dynamics) and are considered complementary.
- Different Types of Care: You might work with a Coach on specific professional goals while seeing a Therapist for clinical mental health support.
If you are seeing multiple providers for different types of care, please let your clinicians know so they can coordinate your treatment plan effectively.

If you feel that your current therapist isn't the right match or you aren't seeing the progress you hoped for, you have the flexibility to switch providers at any time. Our goal is to help you find care that feels comfortable and effective, so you can get the most out of your therapy experience.
