Accessing Care While Out of State or Traveling

Telehealth offers flexibility, but receiving care while traveling isn’t always possible. Because of legal and clinical regulations, your physical location at the time of your session determines whether care can legally proceed.

Providers must be licensed in the state, province, or country where you are physically located during the session. These requirements ensure providers practice within the legal and professional standards of each jurisdiction.

Traveling for Work or Personal Reasons

If you’ll be traveling around the time of a scheduled appointment, here’s what to know:

  • Licensing requirements: Providers must be licensed in the location where you are physically located during the session.
  • Before you travel: If you expect to be in a different state or region, message your provider as soon as possible to confirm whether they’re licensed to practice there.
  • Jurisdictional limits: Some providers hold licenses in multiple states or regions, but many do not. Your provider can help confirm whether your session can proceed or whether rescheduling is needed.
  • Location confirmation: At the start of your session, your provider may ask you to confirm your current city and state. If you’re in a location where they’re not licensed, they cannot legally provide care.
  • Couples & family therapy: Licensing requirements apply to all participants. If any participant is located in a jurisdiction where the provider is not licensed, the session cannot proceed.
  • Late cancellations: If a session is canceled at the scheduled start time due to location restrictions, it may still be subject to a late cancellation fee or a deducted session.

What if I’ve Moved Permanently?

If you’ve relocated, updating your location ensures you’re matched with providers who can legally treat you.

Moving Within the Same Country

For members in the U.S. or Canada, please update your street address in your Account Settings. This allows you to find providers licensed in your new state or province.

Moving Internationally

International moves involve different regulations and benefit structures. Our Care Team will need to manually review and update your account to confirm eligibility.

Need to Reschedule?

If you were unable to attend a session due to travel, or have an upcoming trip planned, you can reschedule by visiting the Appointments tab in the Spring Health app or website.
