Please note: Dependent eligibility varies by benefit plan. Not all sponsoring organizations include dependent coverage, and some may have specific eligibility criteria. To confirm whether dependents are covered under your plan, please contact your sponsoring organization.
Helping your child access mental health support is a priority. If your benefits extend to minor dependents, you will manage their care through a nested, managed account. Because each person’s Spring Health account serves as their private Electronic Health Record (EHR), your child must have their own separate profile.
Age-Based Restrictions & Care Pathways
Before setting up an account, please note that clinical provider availability on our platform is determined by your child's age:
Children (0–5 Years Old)
Account Creation: The parent or guardian must first create their own primary Spring Health account, then build a nested profile for the child.
Care Delivery: Children in this age bracket are not eligible for individual therapy sessions on the platform. Instead, families can exclusively access One-to-One Care Navigation services for personalized guidance and external pediatric referrals.
Children (6–12 Years Old)
Account Creation & Scheduling: Built as a nested profile by the parent or guardian through their primary account. Parents or guardians book all appointments on behalf of the child. The parent or guardian is strictly required to attend the initial intake session.
Clinical Boundaries: During the first session, the provider will review confidentiality limitations and collaborate with the family to determine the appropriate level of parental involvement for future appointments.
Teens (13–17 Years Old)
Account Creation & Scheduling: Depending on local state laws, teens may have the option to create their own standalone account and book their own appointments, or they may be added by a parent.
Consent & Confidentiality: Care is strictly governed by the age of consent laws in the provider’s state of licensure. Providers are responsible for knowing these regional laws and will set clear confidentiality expectations with both the teen and the parent during the intake session.
Steps to Add a Minor Dependent
To get started, you must first register and log in to your own Spring Health account at care.springhealth.com. If you haven’t done so already, you will need to complete your initial questionnaire to access your full account.
- Navigate to Family Settings: Open your account profile menu by selecting the icon with your name in the sidebar.
- Add Your Child: Select Family → Add Family → Add a Child.
- Complete Account Setup: Fill in your child’s information and acknowledge the required clinical notices and consents.
Note: If you do not see the "Family" tab anywhere in your account, dependents may not be covered under your organization's benefit plan.
Email and Password Requirements
Each dependent must have a completely unique email address to create a separate file in our system. If your child does not have an email address of their own, you can use one of these simple strategies:
- Create a standard new email address that you manage on their behalf (we recommend Gmail, iCloud email, or Outlook).
- Use a separate personal email address that you own, provided it is not already linked to an existing Spring Health profile.
- Create a Gmail variant/alias by adding a plus sign (+) and a unique identifier after your username but before the @ symbol.
How Gmail Aliases Work:
- Your email: janesmith@gmail.com
- Your child's account variant: janesmith+childname@gmail.com
Any system notifications sent to the child's variant email address will automatically route straight to your primary Gmail inbox, allowing you to manage everything from one place.
When creating the managed account, you will establish a distinct password for your child. While you are fully responsible for managing the account, your child can use these credentials to log in independently on their own device or via the Spring Health app.
Scheduling Care for Your Child
When scheduling appointments or browsing providers for your child, always ensure you are actively toggled into their specific account profile. This guarantees that provider options, schedule availability, and clinical recommendations are appropriate for your child’s exact age and regional licensing laws.
You can switch into your child’s account using two methods:
Switching Profiles: While logged into your own primary account, navigate to Account → Family → select View Account next to your child’s name.
Direct Login: Log in directly on the homepage using the unique variant email address and password you established for them during registration.
Important Notes
- Each Spring Health member must have their own separate account. Accounts function as individual Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and cannot be shared.
- If an additional parent or guardian needs access to your child’s account, a signed authorization is required. Without this authorization, we cannot share information with anyone other than the primary guardian.
Legal age and medical access rights vary by state and jurisdiction. Depending on a minor’s exact age and state of residence, they may have the legal right to assert confidentiality over their mental health care or independently manage their profile.
- All minor accounts require a designated emergency contact to be added during the initial account creation process. This step is mandatory and cannot be skipped. It ensures that our Care Navigators and clinical providers have immediate, direct access to a trusted adult if a safety concern or crisis arises during care.
