Please note: Prescribing practices and availability of medication management vary by country, and may not be included in your specific benefit plan. Please review your plan details in your account dashboard for more information. Members located outside the U.S. should reach out to their Care Navigator for location-specific support.
Preparing for your first medication management appointment helps ensure you and your provider can develop the most effective care plan together. These sessions are clinical evaluations focused on understanding your physical health and how it relates to your mental well-being.
Preparing for Your First Appointment
Because this is a medical evaluation, having your data ready allows for a more productive conversation.
- Gather Medication History: Make a list of all current medications, including dosages and any vitamins or supplements. It is also helpful to note medications you have tried in the past and how they affected you.
- Review Medical History: Be ready to share information about chronic illnesses, past surgeries, or significant medical procedures.
- Track Your Symptoms: Reflect on the symptoms you are currently experiencing. When did they start? How severe are they, and how do they impact your daily life?
- Write Down Questions: Jotting down concerns in advance ensures you cover everything important to you during the session.
What to Expect During the Appointment
Medication management appointments are similar to other medical visits but focus specifically on the biological aspects of your mental health.
- The Initial Evaluation (45–60 mins): Your provider (Psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner) will conduct an in-depth assessment of your symptoms and history to determine if medication is an appropriate tool for you.
- Follow-Up Visits (15–30 mins): Once a treatment is started, you will have regular check-ins. Your provider will ask:
- "How are you feeling since our last visit?"
- "Have you noticed any new side effects?"
- "Are your symptoms improving, staying the same, or worsening?"
- The Decision is Yours: Meeting with a medication manager is exploratory. You are never obligated to start a prescription, and your provider will discuss the risks and benefits of every option with you.
Questions to Ask Your Provider
It is easy to forget questions in the moment, so consider bringing this list to your appointment:
- "How long will it take before I notice a difference in my symptoms?"
- "What are the most common side effects, and what should I do if I experience them?"
- "Does this medication interact with my current prescriptions or caffeine/alcohol?"
- "What happens if I miss a dose?"
- "Is this a short-term or long-term treatment plan?"
