International Considerations: In many regions, turning 18 means your account transitions to independent control; however, legal ages and access rights vary internationally. For members located outside the U.S., your Care Navigator can help explain how this works in your area.
When a child with a managed dependent account turns 18, their Spring Health account transitions to a self-managed adult account. This shift is designed to empower the young adult with privacy and independence in managing their mental health journey.
What Changes for the 18-Year-Old?
On their 18th birthday, the account transitions automatically. The member will now have sole access to their account using their own unique login credentials.
New Features
- Independent Care Management: Members can independently manage their care, including scheduling, rescheduling, and canceling appointments.
- Expanded Care Access: Members may gain access to adult-specific services that may not have been available previously.
- Privacy & Security: Members can independently manage their password and security settings.
- Updated Assessment: Upon first login as an adult, members may be prompted to complete an adult-level assessment.
- Billing & Insurance: Insurance information will transfer automatically; however, billing notifications will now be sent directly to the member’s registered email address.
What Changes for the Guardian?
To protect the member's privacy as an adult, the guardian’s experience will change as follows:
- Access Change: The dependent’s account will no longer be accessible from the Manage Dependents or Family screens.
- Login Credentials: The 18-year-old must use their own username and password; guardians can no longer log in on their behalf.
- Billing Responsibility: While the account becomes private, guardians may still choose to remain the primary party responsible for payments (if applicable).
Timeline & Communication
We provide plenty of notice to ensure families aren't caught off guard:
- 30 Days Before: An automated email is sent to both the guardian and the minor explaining the upcoming transition.
- On the 18th Birthday: A final notification is sent confirming the account is now a self-managed adult account.
- First Adult Login: The member will be guided through a setup process to update consents and confirm demographic settings.
Privacy Note: If the member wishes for their parent to remain involved in their care, they must complete a Release of Information (ROI) form on or after their 18th birthday to legally grant that access.
