Managing Primary and Secondary Insurance

International Considerations: Billing and insurance processes vary by country and region. This process applies to U.S.-based members only. If you are located outside the U.S., please contact your Care Navigator for next steps.

Coordinating multiple insurance plans can be a bit like solving a puzzle, but our goal is to help you maximize your coverage so you can focus on your care. If you have both a Primary and a Secondary insurance plan, here is how we coordinate the billing process to make it as simple as possible for you.

How the Billing Process Works

The billing journey always starts with your primary carrier:

  1. Primary Submission: A claim is submitted to your primary insurance first. It typically takes 30–60 business days for them to process it.
  2. Explanation of Benefits (EOB): Your primary insurer issues an EOB showing what they paid and what portion is your responsibility (copay, deductible, etc.).
  3. Secondary Coordination: After the primary claim is finalized, the secondary insurance can be billed for the remaining balance.

Billing Paths Based on Your Coverage

Your specific billing path depends on whether your plans are In-Network (INN) or Out-of-Network (OON) with Spring Health.

If your Primary is...

And your Secondary is...

Your Billing Path

In-Network

Out-of-Network

Spring Health bills your Primary. Once finalized, we invoice you for the balance. You can then request a Superbill from us to submit to your Secondary independently for potential reimbursement.

Out-of-Network

In-Network

You submit to your Primary first. Once you receive your Primary EOB, you can:

1. Submit it independently to your Secondary OR

2. Provide the EOB to Spring Health, and we will bill your Secondary for you.

Important Considerations for Out-of-Network (OON) Plans

  • Transparency & Costs: Billing OON insurance often results in unexpected delays and surprise balances. We aim for you to have full visibility into your costs, but please be aware that OON processing timelines are managed entirely by your insurance carrier.
  • Self-Reimbursement: While Spring Health does not bill OON insurance directly, we are happy to provide you with a Superbill (an itemized clinical receipt). You can submit this to your OON carrier to seek potential reimbursement based on your plan's specific benefits.
  • The Role of the EOB: If you want Spring Health to help bill an In-Network Secondary plan after an Out-of-Network Primary has been processed, you must provide us with a copy of the Primary EOB. We cannot move forward with the secondary claim without it.
