Family therapy is a collaborative form of mental health treatment designed to help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. Rather than focusing on one individual, this approach views the family as a connected system and works to strengthen the relationships within it.
What This Means
Family therapy sessions are tailored to the unique needs of your household. Depending on the situation, sessions may include parents, children, siblings, grandparents, or other significant caregivers.
The process focuses on:
- Identifying Dynamics: Understanding how family members interact and how these patterns affect the overall health of the group.
- Improving Communication: Learning new ways to express needs and feelings without escalating conflict.
- Building Resilience: Developing shared strategies to manage stressors like significant life transitions, financial changes, or health issues.
What To Expect
In a family therapy session, a licensed provider facilitates open dialogue in a safe, neutral environment.
- Active Participation: Family members work together to identify challenges and brainstorm solutions.
- Skill Building: The therapist may provide exercises to practice at home to reinforce positive interactions.
- Collaboration: The goal is not to assign blame, but to foster a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
Your Options
Spring Health offers access to providers who specialize in various therapeutic modalities to support families. Family therapy can be particularly helpful when navigating:
- Behavioral challenges in children or teens.
- Major life changes (e.g., divorce, relocation, or loss).
- Substance use or mental health conditions affecting the family unit.
- Navigating cross-generational or caregiver conflicts.
Location & Environment Requirements
To ensure high clinical standards, personal privacy, and legal compliance, virtual sessions are subject to strict environmental and licensing safety rules:
Licensed Jurisdictions: All participants must be physically located in a state or jurisdiction where your provider is legally licensed to practice at the exact time of the session.
Distraction-Free Environment: Sessions will not be conducted while driving or operating a vehicle. If your family is in transit, your provider will ask you to safely pull over and park in a private space before proceeding.
Safe Space Clause: Your provider reserves the right to pause or cancel a session immediately if they determine you or your family members are not in a safe, confidential, or appropriate environment to receive care.
Sessions that cannot proceed due to an unlicensed location, driving violations, or unsafe environments will be canceled. These are handled under our standard 24-hour window rules and may be subject to a late cancellation fee or a lost sponsored session. Always verify your surroundings and your provider's licensing coverage area before joining.
How To Get Started
You can browse our network of specialized family therapists and schedule an appointment through your Spring Health account. For step-by-step instructions on how to set up your first appointment, please see our guide on Booking Couples or Family Therapy.
Family sessions are deducted from the sponsored session balance of the member who scheduled the appointment. If the member who originally booked the care runs out of their sponsored sessions, future appointments are not automatically drawn from the other participant's account.
If you need assistance finding a provider who aligns with your specific family structure, or if you need help transitioning a care plan to another family member's account balance, our Care Team is here to support you.
