Understanding Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a specialized form of support designed to help partners navigate challenges, improve their connection, and foster mutual growth. Unlike individual therapy, the focus is on the relationship dynamic and the patterns of interaction between both individuals.

What This Means

In couples therapy, a licensed provider works with both partners to address the unique needs of their relationship. The process provides a neutral space to explore concerns and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Common focus areas include:

  • Improving Communication: Learning how to express needs and listen to your partner more effectively.
  • Conflict Resolution: Developing tools to manage disagreements constructively without damaging the relationship.
  • Enhancing Intimacy: Strengthening emotional and physical bonds and rebuilding trust.
  • Navigating Transitions: Managing major life changes together, such as career shifts, grief, or expanding your family.

What To Expect During Care

During sessions, a therapist will facilitate guided discussions and may introduce specific exercises tailored to your goals.

  • Collaborative Environment: Both partners are encouraged to participate openly, with the therapist acting as a neutral guide.

  • Insight and Action: You will work to understand the root of recurring issues while learning practical strategies to implement in your daily life.

  • Short-Term or Long-Term Support: The duration of therapy depends on your specific goals and the complexity of the concerns being addressed.

  • Care Referrals: While evaluating your relationship dynamics, your provider may determine that additional, independent support would benefit your overall progress. Depending on your needs, your therapist may refer one or both partners to an individual therapist for personal goals, a wellness coach for actionable behavioral changes, or a medication management provider for clinical psychiatric evaluations.

Location & Environment Requirements

To ensure high clinical standards, personal privacy, and legal compliance, virtual sessions are subject to strict safety and licensing rules:

  • Licensed Jurisdictions: All participants must be physically located in a state or jurisdiction where your provider is legally licensed to practice at the exact time of the session.

  • Distraction-Free Environment: Sessions will not be conducted while driving or operating a vehicle. If you are in transit, your provider will ask you to safely pull over and park in a private space before proceeding.

  • Safe Space Clause: Your provider reserves the right to pause or cancel a session immediately if they determine you are not in a safe, confidential, or appropriate environment to receive care.

Sessions that cannot proceed due to an unlicensed location, driving violations, or unsafe environments will be canceled. These are handled under our standard 24-hour window rules and may be subject to a late cancellation fee or a lost sponsored session. Always verify your surroundings and your provider's licensing coverage area before joining.

How To Get Started

You can browse our network of specialized couples therapists and schedule an appointment through your Spring Health account. For step-by-step instructions on how to set up your first appointment, please see our guide on Booking Couples or Family Therapy.

Couples and family sessions are deducted from the sponsored session balance of the member who scheduled the appointment. If the member who originally booked the care runs out of their sponsored sessions, future appointments are not automatically drawn from the other participant's account.

If you need assistance finding a provider who aligns with your specific preferences, or if you need help transitioning a couples care plan to a dependent's account balance, our Care Team is here to support you.
